Virtual NECC09 Participation: After NECC, Whats Next?

Once again, overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content that came out of NECC. My largest lesson learned was time management and focus on core area of interest. It is very hard to choose 1 candy when in the candy shop.

I spent a great deal of time on Twitter and realized, after the experience, that much of what was posted could be very easily taken out of context. I often ended up tracking down particular statements to the sessions in which they were said, and then having to locate video clips,… Continue

Virtual NECC09 Participation: Twitter, Streaming Schedules, SL

Well, hold on to your keyboard, and away we go. Virtual NECC is on fire, and blazing a rapid and fast trail. Even after getting up early this morning to track events and follow the streaming, I am overwhelmed to say the least. I had to turn tweet-deck off for a bit and gather a better strategy for following this virtually.

To begin with Twitter seems to be the most active place for following persons reactions, ideas and thoughts about the different conferences. Using Tweetdeck you can enter man… Continue

Virtual NECC09 Participation: Webstreaming, Videos, Elluminate and SL

After another morning of thorough searching, I have pulled together a list of sites that will have webstreaming, videos or access to live meeting sessions.
For convenience I have added a set of useful links at the top of my page so it is a one stop, quick access for the conference.

As of this morning, June 27th, I have been able to check out two random webstreams that individuals had setup and posted a link via twitter, @scottmerrick and @markwagner. Both were impromptu webcasts, and they are a… Continue

Virtual NECC09 Participation: How to find the needle of interest!

After posting yesterday I realized that I had put out many resources, but for many I think this could be very overwhelming, especially if many of these web 2.0 pieces are new to you. So, I think that I will post a bit each day on how I am utilizing each source.
Today's topic will be how to use NING, the NECC NING in order to access your specific area of interest and use the tools and resources available.

The first thing I recommend you do on NING is to edit your profile and get your page comple… Continue

About Me:
Short Version: Educator, Technology enthusiast, Outdoor Adventurer
Long Version:
I am a certified Science educator, having taught for 11 years in varied settings, I have learned that the basis for learning is passion. When I see students exploring, having an adventure, or asking questions I know that there is an opportunity for learning.
This is how Richard and I created Kigluait Adventures.
Kigluait or Kigluaiq is an eskimo or Inupiat word for the teeth on a snow saw. They are a set of beautiful Mtns north of Nome Alaska. It was here that we discovered the need for learning to stem from seeking adventures and passions.
It was about the same time that I discovered an interest in Collaborative Technology, networking and students leading and running the classroom.
From these interests stemmed the first project in which we worked with GCI and BSSD to create Videoconference Sleuths and a web quest learning unit. They were a huge success and a ton of fun.
We began to explore the idea of connecting with other schools to have them participate in a large adventure that encouraged kids to meet State Standards but be driven and motivated to learn the content. Nothing new here, just new in the concept of applying it to collaborative environments.
Thus bloomed the concept of Kigluait Adventures. Ever since we have been working diligently to connect youth around the world to share in Lifestyles and the concept of sustainability all with a heavy basis on engaging in our passions.

2009 IVC Session: Lines and Patterns presentation Materials

Lines and Patterns Handouts

Innovativeness/Uniqueness

Lines and Patterns is an innovative IVC program that combines a highly interactive videoconferencing experience with dynamic web 2.0 applications. The result is a new, reproducible, way for teachers and content providers to team up and collaborate to improve the learning potential of traditional “virtual field trips!” Lines and Patterns follows the core belief of Kigluait Educational Adventures that educational videoconferencing be dynamically interactive and explore subject matter that can be taught in no other way. This is accomplished by asking participants and presenter alike to examine their respective environments, find (and capture) images- lines and patterns- that are the comparable, and then explore the “why’s” and “what ifs” that those similarities bring up. Following the actual videoconference, students and presenter continue their discussions through a variety of web 2.0 tools that also allow individual teachers to extend out the conversation to other students and classrooms around the country.

Proven Success or Potential for Future Success

While one of the “funnest,” Lines and Patterns is only one of many programs that Kigluait Educational Adventures offers that blends the use of IVC and Web 2.0 technologies. The mixing of these two mediums is a fundamental principal to increasing and improving the learning opportunities afforded students participating in a distance-learning, “virtual field trip,” style learning event. In the past 3 years since Kigluait Educational Adventures adopted this- easily learned- format of programming, we have experienced an annual growth rate of greater than 200%! The majority of which can only be attributed to “word-of-mouth” marketing- which we take as affirmation toward the effectiveness of the type of program formatting.

Integration of Technology

Lines and Patterns is primarily a visual program, breaking down the abundance of visual stimulus we are bombarded with daily into fundamental elements. To help us do this, on the presenter side, we use a wide variety of techniques; a green screen, digital still camera, a wireless video camera- allowing us to get outside and freely roam around the environment, and plain old pencil and paper are just a few. On the student/participant side, we encourage still camera use, innovative use of the IVC camera, paper/pencil, and water colors (don’t worry, for this presentation we’ll rely on the IVC camera, your drawing skills, and maybe even your cell phone’s camera!).

After our IVC meeting we rely on web 2.0 tools. Our online Moodle classroom is the portal we always start out from but go on from there to utilize just about anything you can think of from Twitter to Wiki!

Fulfillment of Educational Mission

By combining typical “one-shot” virtual field trip IVC programming with the dynamic expanding world of Web 2.0, the Lines and Patterns program really presses students and teachers alike to take a new look at their environment and their relationship to it by opening up new lines of on-going communication between people from all types of different landscapes. And of course the program (and all Kigluait programs) is (are) tied to national learning standards for both educators and students.

Chris,

Thank you for the welcome. I'm just finishing up the JHU/ISTE A&S certificate program so I should have some free time in the near future to learn my way around! I'll let you know if I have any questions.
