Join us for the BrainPOP Session at NECC 2009 - "Global Connections through Natural Disasters: A Project-Based Learning Lesson"

Amber Rowland, University of Kansas with Dr. Kari Stubbs, BrainPOP
Monday, 6/29/2009, 8:30am–9:30am

Tornadoes! Earthquakes! Floods! See how technology enhances the student exploration of natural disasters through global communication, collaboration, and project sharing.

The purpose of this model lesson is to offer participants specific strategies, methods and tips to assist with the implementation of a Project-Based Learning (PBL) lesson on natural disasters. This lesson is derived from the Technology Rich Classroom, Title IID initiative in Kansas. This federally funded project assists 3rd-6th grade teachers with the successful integration of technology in the content areas of science, math and reading. This model lesson is an example of the “real-world”, PBL approach that TRC teachers implement into their classrooms.

Beginning with the Essential Question, "How do natural disasters affect people?", the current Project Coordinator of the TRC project as well as a former TRC Project Coordinator will guide students through an exploration of natural disasters around the world. Through email exchanges, students discover where and under what conditions natural disasters are most likely to occur, as well as the impact they have on humans.

BrainPOP resources on natural disasters will be highlighted and integrated into the lesson!
