Bridging the Educational Gap between University & HS Using Technology

With 78% of our incoming freshmen in need of mathematics remediation, this is a pilot project with the Mahoning Valley Career and Technical Center to help problem students in our region prepare themselves properly for a post-high school education at either the university or community college. This initiative required that I align our remedial Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & 2 courses at the university with OH K-12 standards, introduce the students to proper study skills and time management, require the extensive use of technology for remediation, and require that the students use Student Reflective Learning as a vehicle by which they learn to become more accountable for their learning. Students take 4 years of mathematics in high school. In their senior year students can opt for dual college enrollment to earn college credit for several math courses at our university. Should this pilot be successful, the superintendent of Youngstown City Schools(YCS)will require all districts to participate in a city-wide partnership with the university.
