Social Networking is not a new concept. Learning Management Systems certainly aren't either. Learning Communities, however, are a new idea in the learning process. Learning Communities blend social media concepts like Facebook with learning management systems technologies like Blackboard. The net result is a learning environment that ignites learning and challenges students to think for themselves. My son's favorite teacher at Enloe High School gives the students an assignment and encourages them to take control of the learning process. This classroom and the learning process doesn't revolve around the teaching guide as the foundation for delivery. Please take a few minutes to read the attached white paper, The Pedagogy of Poverty.
Learning Communities create social learning environments and encourage students to think, learn and solve problems on their own. Yes, I am blessed to work for a company that provides these systems but I also have an abiding passion for helping students with multiple learning styles and multiple intelligences. I believe that many of the drop outs are actually very intelligent students who just need to be taught differently. I hope you will take a few minutes to consider Open Source Learning Communities. Certainly we are in one right now and so the trend is real.
