NECC Ning

This is the first national ed tech conference (as far as I know) to make use of a social network as a value-adding endeavor. My question is this!

What do you wish you could do here?

Elgg's user interface certainly isn't its biggest strength (its openness is). Out of the box it is quite plain, though the layout is very stylable with some css magic. I haven't used NING mutch yet, but there are some aspects I like (the drag/drop of blocks is very nice!)

Elgg is currently being re-written almost form the ground up by the guys are CurveRider. The upcoming 1.0 release is looking very slick.

I think one of Elgg's strengths for an ed environ is that it doesn't have all the "stuff" going on all around the fringes. I like Ning, but I think that too many options not only increases complexity, but also can become a distraction. We seem to have this penchant for "features" and the assumption that "more is better." But sometimes I think more is just more, and that too much can have a draining effect on adoption and effective use.

For example, take a look at Tumblr. It's simple, lightweight, clean, and effective, and is all the rage.

I use it for my son who is 9 yo. AND, it works for mobile blogging. OTOH, you have to add commenting with disqus.

Yeah, but CUE is for a pretty big state (California), the problem was that not enough of the attendees are up on Web 2.0. I would say that CUE gave the ning a much bigger push than ISTE has with this community. Basically, they pushed everyone there if you wanted session info, but people just weren't willing to follow. The session presenters did a great job of posting, but almost NO ONE continued the conversation. The platform isn't as important as how easy-to-use it is to my mind, and how willing the participants are to go there and use it.

Hey! Check out my blog post on the Ning (and other?) Dashboard: www.stevehargadon.com/2008/05/ning-dashboard.html

I use this ALL the time.

Steve
Thanks for that. Now you have answered my question posed to Jenny...now to figure out how to get my profiles merged to one... :)

I'm sorry to say I'm missing this conference physically, but as I learned at a recent tech conference in Honolulu, the physical space is beginning to matter less and less. (Although I still wish I was there!) I will be following along eagerly, trying to learn new ways to incorporate technology in my classroom.

You may know this already, but a few days after the conference, you can find links to all the sessions that the conference arranged to have podcast and webcast. And I am hope we will find an easy way to locate the more informal on-the-spot-broadcasts.

I hope folks who are lucky enough to attend NECC, share what they are learning with those of us who cannot attend this year. I am really bummed, first time in years I have not been at NECC. Grrrr....... So my plea, is please share the wealth!!!

The Ning platform has more tools available than are being used on this network that might be helpful going forward to bring aboard. One simple tool is the "Notes" feature which would allow posting of requests or notices that are not meant to solicit a response. That way discussion forums would be the container for one-time topic postings. For example, a request for help on how to do something could go into a Note. Or a change of time for a session could be posted in a note. And of course, it makes sense to have a calendar tool available. Especially if the tool integrated with the NECC planner. Integration with existing third party sites is either non existent or rudimentary right now in the ning platform. It was developed to serve the broadest possible use cases and to afford the greatest flexibility. A number of posters to these forums have talked about issues that flirt with the idea of rostering participants and permissions-based controls that go in the direction of a walled garden. Not sure everyone wants that but the discussion is good and I'd be interested in knowing whether ISTE/NECC is discussing this with ning or how follow up is intended to advance the ideas and requests posted here. Thanks!

I love that NECC is in an environment I'm used to - especially since I can't attend. I'd like to see easier access to online and streaming content - perhaps more use of the new event feature to show when they're scheduled.
